Like any disrupting technology, AI and synthetic media have received much negative press over the last few years. They have been seen as somewhat of a deception because some use them to spread disinformation or to impersonate celebrities in pornographic productions.
But thanks to technological super fast improvements (i.e., DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion or Google’s Imagen), AI enables companies to digitally create and easily use face or full-body hyperrealistic avatars, voices, and backdrop scenes for movies.
And with pandemic restrictions making conventional filming risky, the benefits of using synthetic media in industries, such as film production, have been magnified.
The Synthetic Futures Community proposes to explore and discuss how Synthetic Media are used today in the movies industry by VFX artists and directors to create a new generation of movies and videos and what kind of challenges both artistic and ethical ones Generative AI makes.
